From Buzz Ricksons:
To enhance camouflage effects, the U.S. Army adopted a camouflage pattern printed on both sides of the fabric—green on one side and tan on the other—in 1942. However, the fabric was not designed to be reversible. The chest has a large vertical pleated pocket, and the elbows are reinforced with double layers. A gas flap, designed to improve sealing against poison gas infiltration, is located under the front placket, all placed on the green side. The tan side is plain. The design closely resembles the olive drab M-43 uniform adopted around the same time, but buttons are concealed to prevent snagging on equipment or while crawling on the ground.
